January 11, 1926 – April 19, 2023
David R. Luna was called home to be with our Lord and Savior on April 19, 2023, at his home in Sacramento, CA surrounded by his family. He was born on January 11, 1926, in Cucamonga, California. David met his lifetime partner, Alice (affectionately known as Licha), at The Michael’s Club in San Bernardino, CA. David and Alice married in 1957, and after a couple of moves, settled in Sacramento, CA in 1966. David and Alice were active members in their neighborhood parish and served as Eucharistic ministers at St. Philomene’s Roman Catholic Church in Sacramento. David started his civilian career at Norton Air Force Base, in Southern California, and was later transferred to McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento, CA where he retired, on December 18, 1985, after 31 years of service.
Following David’s retirement, David and Alice returned to their favorite activity (that they loved to do together) dancing! They took lessons in Country Swing and Line dancing. Alice learned to Tap dance and performed regularly with her group of senior women dancers. Her dance group would perform various tap dance routines at the Senior Centers around the local area, while David served as the emcee for their dance performances. David’s other hobbies included bike riding, taking computer classes at New Horizons, repairing jewelry, and crafting rosaries for family and friends. David loved fishing and taking his boat out on Folsom Lake and the Sacramento River. He enjoyed taking numerous friends and family out for rides on his fishing boat.
In his early years, David, having a passion for his Catholic faith, joined the monastery as brother Peter from January 6, 1949 to August 3, 1955. He began his missionary service at the Holy Redeemer College as a Redemptorist Postulant in Oakland, CA. David continued his religious service by teaching 7th grade SRE (Special Religious Education) at his home parish in Sacramento for several decades.
David is preceded in death by his wife, Alice J. Luna of 64 ½ years: his parents Gregorio and Maria Guadalupe Luna, his sister Guadalupe Moreno, his brother Gregorio Luna, his brother Macario Luna, sister Felicitas Ruiz, and sister Antonia De La Torre. He is survived by his four children: David (Arla) Luna, Maria (James) Copland, Carole (Steve) Miller, and Deanna Zemovich; his four grandchildren: Nickolas Zemovich, Marcus Miller, Samuel Miller, and Elidia Copland; and one great-grandchild, Alyssa Keenan. In addition, he is survived by his sisters: Catalina Chaparro, and Angelina Garcia both of San Bernardino, CA; along with a multitude of nieces, nephews, and cousins. In his 97 years and four months, David lived a full life filled with the love of family and friends. We will always remember him with love and fondness until we meet again in paradise.
