Tim never missed the TV weather report or the National Weather Service online weather forecast so he could plan his next fishing trip. When he wasn’t fishing, you could find Tim working on his boat, tinkering in the garage, or out in the yard working on one of his projects. He enjoyed watching TV from his favorite recliner and eating his favorite foods prepared by Dorothy at Casa Howland. A meal was not complete without dessert, and Tim’s favorites included homemade white chocolate chip cookies with walnuts or sneaking ice cream as a midnight snack.
A sergeant in the United States Marie Corps, Tim served as an F-4 fighter jet mechanic in the Vietnam War from 1970-1974. His decorations included the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one-star, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, Good Conduct Medal 1st & 2nd award, and Navy Unit Commendation.
After serving his country, Tim used his skills in several occupations before becoming a salesman at Motion Industries, where he met Dorothy. Together, they built a loving home with their daughter Leslie and son Ryan in Houston before moving to the Rio Grande Valley.
Raising his family in Rio Hondo, Tim spent most weekends out on the water of the Laguna Madre, sight-fishing on his boat. A fishing trip with Tim was a rite of passage for many family and friends. In 2001, Tim received his U.S. Merchant Marine Officer license from the United States Coast Guard. His captain’s log from 1999-2005 documented over 700 trips catching over 4,200 fish, including red and black drum, trout, flounder, and sheepshead from his favorite fishing spots.
In his retirement, Tim frequently spent time fishing during the week with his favorite net girl, Dorothy, or brother, Martin. Many weekends included time with the grandkids playing on the playground in his backyard and taking the kids for a trip on Grandpa’s boat. He enjoyed time with his dogs Sadie and Rylie, playing ball and teaching them new tricks.
Tim’s legacy will live on in the hearts and lives of all those who love him. In lieu of flowers, the family requests for donations to be made to St. Helen’s Catholic Church, Community Church of Rio Hondo, or the Disabled American Vets Charity.
