During her school years Mildred grew up in Concan where she and her four sisters spent their free time playing in the Frio River, riding their family horse (who was always ready to go home), and going to the movies.
Her family moved to Rio Hondo during her senior year of high school where she met and was married to Lester Howland for 76 years. They had five children: Carol, Martin, Timothy, Janis and Jennifer. Her greatest joy was cooking for family gatherings, especially Thanksgiving, making her famous French Bread, Roast Turkey, Dressing, Cranberry Salad and Pumpkin Pie. Mildred was a longtime member of the Rio Hondo Community Church, and all the members looked forward to her devouring her Three Corn Casserole at the monthly potluck. She was an active member of the Bluebonnet Club, and the Cameron County Home Demonstration Club where she was once named Woman of the Year. Playing cards was a favorite activity with family and her dear friends Fern and George.
Left to cherish her memories are Martin R Howland, son; Daughter, Janis Howland Kidd (husband Richard); Daughter-in-law, Dorothy Howland (husband Timothy); Sister, Margaret (Peggy) Kozelski. Grandchildren: Richard Meyer (wife Heather), Paula Meyer Hawkins (husband Randy), Ryan Howland (wife Ashley), Leslie Howland (husband Pablo Zuniga), Kevin Kidd, Zachary Kidd; Eight great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lester B Howland; daughter, Carol Ann Meyer; son, Timothy Howland; and daughter, Jennifer Howland; Sisters: Rachel Kracht, Jo Anna Conklin, and Mary Lou Ramsey
She will be greatly missed and forever loved by her family and friends.
