William Charles Metz, age 75, died of COVID-19 on March 8, 2021 at St. Luke's Baptist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. He was preceded in death by over 45,000 Texans and almost half a million Americans who succumbed to the vicious virus in just a little over a year. Unlike many other unfortunate souls, he did not die alone and was comforted at his passing by his nephew and niece, Rick and Marcie.
Known to his nieces and nephews as “crazy Uncle Willy Worm”, Will led an adventurous life in his younger years. When he came to visit, he’d usually arrive in the middle of the night with his belongings packed in large garbage cans tethered next to one of his motorcycles in the bed of his truck. The cans would also contain presents cocooned in multiple boxes and layers and layers of newspaper and tape. As all the kids worked to free the well-protected treasures, Will would tell stories about his latest exploits. Breaking bones while dirt biking in Baja. Encountering a rattlesnake in the toilet while hunting in South Texas. Making “beer runs” to Colorado back when Coors wasn’t sold in Texas.
Will’s adventures started at a young age. His parents, Winston and Thelma Metz, reported that he started escaping from his crib at 9 months, eventually forcing his father to modify the crib to create a large cage. Refusing to be contained, he simply disassembled the crib a few months later and was found roaming the yard. Some of his favorite adventures as a child included playing cowboys, shooting guns, playing baseball, and riding his electric bike. One day he was riding the bike when his pant leg got caught in the chain. He had to carry the bike home wearing only his underpants. From that day on, he always wore shorts under long pants.
Up until his death, Will was a big drinker – a big drinker of milk. He really, really, really loved milk. In fact, he loved milk more than he hated getting kidney stones. As a native south Texan, he also had a strong appreciation for a hot plate of enchiladas, rice and beans, his mom’s tamale pie, and his grandma’s berliners.
Will outlived all of his adventuresome friends as well as his sister Thedra and great nephew Andy. He’s survived by his daughter Cassie and his nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, Lori, Rick, Tim, Julie, Zak, Julian, Micah, Nathan, and Anna.
A celebration of life will be held this summer and he will be buried in Yorktown Texas at Westside Cemetery alongside his parents and grandparents.
