Vera Vaughn Brown died peacefully in the early morning hours of November 29, 2024. A lifetime resident of San Antonio, Vera was born on August 18, 1925 to parents Homer and Myrtle Vaughn. Vera was the eldest child in her family of two brothers and one sister. Growing up in the depression years instilled positive work values which she learned from her mother and father. Vera retained these values throughout her long life of ninety-nine years. Vera graduated from George Brackenridge High School in 1943. During that time of WWII, Vera was a Captain in the Brackenridge Regiment of the Reserve Officers Training Corps, and was also a member of the National Honor Society.
Vera married her first love and high-school sweetheart, Horace Newton Brown on August 1, 1943. His brief employment at Western Union was interrupted by his WWII military service, when he was inducted in the Army on July 27, 1944. Vera then moved to California doing volunteer work for a military wives organization. After returning home from his active duty with the Battalion 592nd Field Artillery in France and Germany (Battle of the Bulge), they were reunited in San Antonio on June 30, 1946. A year later, their family began with the birth of Cynthia, followed by Janet, and Joy Delaine. As Horace developed war-related medical issues, Vera became employed as an accountant at The Great Western Company where she retired after twenty years of dedicated service. Horace’s death in June, 1991, ended many years of Vera’s uncompromising love and dedication to her husband of forty-eight years. Undoubtedly, she has been incredibly inspiring to her family and friends.
In Vera’s later years, she became very interested in computer graphics, and the ability to print greeting cards. It was truly her gift from above that allowed her to share her greetings with family and friends. She loved to send and design birthday and especially Christmas cards. As time passed, she worked diligently to not oversight someone’s birthday. This month, she printed twenty Christmas cards for family and friends, but her death precluded her from signing those final cards.
Jesus Christ was the single most important part of her life. Even during her final days, she read and studied scripture with the assistance of special magnifying lenses. Don’t interrupt her Sunday mornings, as they were dedicated to her favorite television ministries.
Nothing compared to seeing her smiles when she knew family was coming over. She looked forward to daily phone-calls from her sister Janie and her brother Billy. She truly loved receiving face-time visits from her grandchildren.
Vera is survived by daughter Cynthia and husband Wilson Parish; daughter Joy Delaine and husband Jeff App. Grandchildren: Ashley Huddleston (Harper), Priscilla Dixon (Chad), Wilson Parish, Jr. (Carissa), Stephen Pahl (Julie), Melissa Cassidy, Katy Howell (Collin) and Gregory App (Amanda); and fifteen great-grandchildren who affectionately called her “MeMom”. Vera is also survived her brother Billy Vaughn, and sister Janie and husband Bud Stowe.
We especially want to thank Mary Rincon and Tommi Aranda for their very special love of Vera and her family. We also want to thank April Fulkerson of River City Hospice for her tireless support and love for Vera.
Memorial contributions may be made to Riverside Community Church 12100 Bulverde Road Bulverde, Texas 78163.
