Steven Lynn Smith passed away on March 28, 2016 after a battle with metastatic prostate cancer. He was born on June 8, 1950 to parents Moddie E. Smith and Kathryne Myatt in San Antonio, TX. He is remembered by his wife, Dr. Jacquelyn Alexander; children Shawna Schmidt (Michael) and Bradley Smith; stepsons Richard Harrison (Victoria) and Charles Harrison (Linda); grandchildren Camden, Haddie, Ethan, Cale, Charlie and Connor; sister April Myers (Bo); sister-n-law Janice Crow; brother-in-law Jack R. Alexander; nephew Chris Myers (Michelle); niece Karisha Schattenberg (Charles), aunt June Philippus; and his father’s widow, Evelyn Smith.
Steven received a Bachelor of Music Education from Southwest Texas State University and a Master of Music from University of Texas at San Antonio.
His work as a band director and teacher at public school districts in the central Texas area led to many of his school bands earning regional, area and state-level honors. He was a gifted percussionist and played with several San Antonio area music groups including Sentimental Journey Orchestra, Boerne Concert Band, The Classics Big Band, Fredericksburg Theater Company and Ken Parrock combo. He created and led the Prime Time Jazz Orchestra. Known as a skilled musician, who held himself to the highest standard of professional excellence, he was a role-model for both his high school band students and his colleagues. He was loved by his family and grandchildren who called him “Papa” and “a good man” to those who knew him.
Memorial service to celebrate the life of Steve Smith will be held Sunday, April 10th at 2:00 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel.
