COL Johnson was preceded in death by his wife, June Johnson and daughter Betty. He is survived by son Eric Johnson and his wife Denise, son Bill Johnson and his wife Nette, son Kevin Johnson, daughter Patricia Hogue, daughter Barbara Schild and her husband Edward, 13 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
He was a graduate of West Point, class of 1939, and served under General Patton in the 3rd Army where he received the Bronze Star with 2 Oak Leaf clusters for valor in the Battle of the Bulge and the Rhine Valley, and the Legion of Honor from France for his leadership in battle that lead to their liberation in WW2. His esteemed career further included serving at the Pentagon from 1958 to 1962, Chief of Staff to General Westmoreland 1965-66 during the Viet Nam War, and Assistant Chief of Staff, Commander of Operations of the 4th Army at Fort Sam Houston until his retirement in 1969. Once retired from the military, he then became head of the math department while teaching at Saint Mary’s Hall. He retired from teaching after 11 years.
He was fond of horses and playing golf. He was a true patriot – a man who loved his country and his family. He was deeply loved by family and friends and will be deeply missed. He touched the lives of many, both young and old. We are thankful for his life, his love, and his legacy, that will live on in all of us.
The Visitation will be 5-7 pm, Thursday, May 9, 2019 at Sunset Funeral Home. The Graveside Service will be held at 9:30 am, Friday, May 10, 2019 at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery (Shelter #3) with full Military Honors. The Memorial Service will follow at 11:00 am at the Army Residence Community (ARC), 7400 Crestway.
