Robert Lawrence Strain, born May 25, 1936, in Cross Plains, Tennessee, passed away on September 1, 2023, in San Antonio, TX, at the age of 87, surrounded by his loving family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Floyd Strain and Nancy Jane (Chatman) Strain; his wife Doris June Strain; brothers, George, Leroy, and William Strain; and sisters, Jessie Mai Bell, Mattie Bell Jones, and Genell Walker. Robert leaves to cherish his memory two sisters, Annie Jean McGill and Mildred Lewis (David); children, Audrey R. Blake (Perry), Dr. Robert L. Strain, Jr. (Maria), William E. Strain (Lisa), Leroy A. Strain (Francee); grandchildren, David Butler (Kristin), Marqus Butler, Brenna Strain, Jamie Palmer (Connor), Terrell Strain, William Strain, Jr. (Ashleigh), Lawrence Stampino-Strain, Beatrice Stampino-Strain; great grandchildren, Narada Wakefield (Kelly), DeSean Wakefield, Layla Butler, Adriauna Butler, David Butler Jr., Judah Palmer and one great-great grandson, Amari Evans; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Robert was a faithful member and deacon of Crestview Baptist Church for well over 45 years and was in charge of the Benevolence Ministry for many years. He was also active in his Sunday School class and other church ministries. Robert was a retired Army veteran who proudly served with Explosive Ordnance Disposal units around the world to include, Ft. Carson, CO; Ft. Chaffee, AR; Red River Army Depot, TX; Corpus Christi Naval Air Station, TX; 2 tours to South Korea; Ft. Sill, OK; and Fort Sam Houston, TX where he was medically retired. Robert also obtained Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Our Lady of The Lake University, San Antonio, TX.
Visitation will be held at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel on Monday, September 18, 2023, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am with interment to follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 1:00 pm.
