Born March 19, 1934 in San Antonio, TX, Bob graduated from Alamo Heights HS then attended San Antonio College and Trinity University before enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1954. After his service ended, he attended the University of Texas at Austin, graduating in 1963 with a BBA. Bob was the Director of Purchasing for Robert B. Green Hospital in the 1960s and was called upon to help establish the Data Processing Department for Bexar County Hospital District. In 1970 he joined Santa Rosa Medical Center as a Senior Systems Analyst/Programmer/Supervisor, leaving in 1989. He then established his own company, Software by Design, and eventually moved on to the role of Senior System Analyst at Pabst Brewing before finally retiring in 2004.
Bob’s hobby was helping others and getting on that PC of his; actually, he had multiple PCs – his own network! Whether it was fixing a broken pipe, a broken car, or a broken computer – Bob was wonderful about helping others. He was an amazing father – taking the girls fishing; building them makeshift snow sleds; cooking animal-shaped pancakes on a Saturday morning; taking family trips to Canyon Lake, Disney World, Washington D.C., and the California coast; and attending countless high school football games to see the girls perform during halftime. And after he and his wife of more than 45 years reached that empty nest, they traveled the world together. They hiked in the Rockies and Mt. Washington, walked the streets of Boston and Montreal, and whale watched off the coast of Cape Anne. They sailed to Alaska and searched for his father’s family while in Vancouver. Eventually, they crossed the pond and experienced England together – all the typical sights as well as some out of the way places with Bob thrilled to drive on the wrong side of the road, especially through the Cotswolds. From there, they chunneled to France where Bob got to pretend he was a race car driver and drive the highway from Calais to Paris at 100+ mph. They overdosed on French pastries, toured the Louvre, went to the top of the Eifel Tower, learned of 9/11 while at Versailles, and prayed together at Notre Dame. It was an incredible adventure.
Unfortunately, it was their last big trip together for Bob faced life-threatening surgery in 2006 for an aortic aneurysm and when he pulled through, life was good. He was able to spend precious time with his grandsons, whom he adored. There were trips to the zoo, the park, and Sea World with lots of sleepovers! But it wasn’t too long before he began to experience the first symptoms of Alzheimer’s. It was a long and arduous journey – one he traveled with his wife, family, and friends by his side. His long goodbye finally ended on Wednesday evening, February 8, 2017.
Bob is survived by his wife, Patricia; daughters Rebecca Lee-Ann Noske Halvorson [Dean] of San Antonio, TX and Janice Corinne Noske [Noah Spangler] of West Hollywood, CA; Grandsons Riley and Niklas Halvorson of San Antonio, TX. The family also wishes to acknowledge, with profound gratitude, Sophia Rhone and Lia Lucaci, Bob’s caregivers for almost three years. Their level of care was extraordinary, bringing him laughter and much joy.
