Rita was born to Toribio and Susie Gonzales on April 29, 1941 in San Antonio, Texas. She attended Little Flower Catholic School from kindergarten through high school and enjoyed school, playing sports (volleyball and softball) and going to dances. She enjoyed music from the 40’s and 50’s. Rita went on to graduate from Our Lady of the Lake College (now OLLU) with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. She initially worked as a medical technologist at the Baptist Hospital before meeting and marrying the love of her life, José M. Arredondo. They married on November 5, 1966 in San Antonio, Texas and enjoyed two honeymoon years together before starting their family. Rita was a patient, loving, and beautiful stay-at-home wife and mother of three. She was the homemaker, referee, counselor, disciplinarian, nurse, alarm clock, chef, sounding board, cheerleader, caregiver, prayer and spiritual teacher, quiet leader and everything in between.
Rita went back to the workforce in 1985 working for a hematologist and then transitioned to working in Client Services for Quest Diagnostics for 20 years. She taught Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD), worked as a Poll Worker during many elections in the 70’s and 80’s, and participated in many bible studies throughout the years. She was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church for over 49 years. She was diligent at prayer and was a faithful daughter of Christ.
Rita is preceded in death by her husband, José M. Arredondo, parents, Toribio Gonzales and Susie Rico Gonzales, and Baby Arredondo.
Rita will be lovingly remembered by her children, José Antonio Arredondo, Carlos Miguel Arredondo, and Rita Sue Arredondo (Roberto Alán Guerra); Grandchildren, Victoria Ann Arredondo (Brandon Ibarra-Menchaca), Carlos Andres Arredondo (Katya), Jessica Ann Arredondo, Nickolaus Alán Guerra, and Alexa Isabella Guerra; great-Grandchildren, Arnaldo Menchaca III and Damon Thomas Menchaca, and numerous relatives.
Pallbearers will be José Antonio Arredondo, Carlos Miguel Arredondo, Carlos Andres Arredondo, Brandon Ibarra-Menchaca, Roberto Alán Guerra, and Nickolaus Alán Guerra.
Visitation will be at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home, 6321 Bandera Rd, San Antonio, Texas 78238, on Monday, June 24, 2024, from 6 to 9 P.M. The rosary will start at 7 P.M. and be officiated by Deacon Scott Imburgia. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at 10 A.M. at St. Dominic Catholic Church, 5919 Ingram Rd, San Antonio, Texas 78228. Interment will follow at San Fernando Cemetery #2, 746 Castroville Rd, San Antonio, Texas 78237. Fr. Agustin Estrada will officiate the funeral mass and Deacon Jaime Polanco will officiate at the cemetery.
