Hike was born to Richard “Dick” and Margaret Jackson on March 22nd, 1955, in San Antonio, Texas where his family roots date back to the Alamo. He graduated from Alamo Heights High School and then went on to the University of Texas where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and met the love of his life, Valorie. Hike and Valorie were blessed with three beautiful children and 47 wonderful years together.
Hike was an avid outdoorsman and a proud little league coach for all 3 of his children and many of their friends. He enjoyed coaching baseball and softball for 20+ years for the Alamo Heights Little league and served on the Board for numerous years, in a variety of roles, including President. When he wasn’t coaching, you could find him deer or bird hunting. His favorite pass time of all, though, was being a father. He took great pride in being his children’s biggest fan.
Hike was a quiet, gentle and kind person with great faith in God. He was a longtime member of Alamo Heights United Methodist Church where he served as an usher over 30 years, as well as serving on the building committee for many years. Any job he undertook, whether is was his paid profession or coaching, roles at the church, or being a father, he looked at all of them as the most important thing could be doing and worked hard to be the best at each.
Hike was preceded in death by his father: Richard Blair Jackson, and his mother: Margaret Mauermann Jackson.
He is survived by his wife: Valorie, sons: Russell Jackson and Daniel Jackson (wife Perry and son August), daughter: Emily Beckwith (husband Scott and children Colette and Owen), siblings: Martha James (husband John), Mary Alexander (husband Jim), and Blair Jackson (wife Sheila), niece: Kelly, and nephews: Jamie (wife Audrey, children James and Joshua), William (wife Sylvia, children Asa, Teddy and Alyson), Richard, and Christopher.
Richard Hiram Jackson was a respected coach, a skilled hunter, and a loving father and husband. He will be greatly missed.
He has fought the good fight and has finished the race. He has kept the faith and from now on there is reserved for him the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give him on that day, and not only to him but also to all who have longed for his appearing. (II Timothy 4:7-8)
