With heavy hearts, we announce the death of Richard “Rich” William Dowling of Sugar Land, Texas, who passed away on December 3, 2022 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer. Rich was born in Boston, Massachusetts on November 17, 1948 to Robert Dowling and Eileen Wilkens.
Rich retired from the US Army in 1992 as a Major in the Medical Service Corps after 20 years of dedicated service to his country. During his service years, Rich provide critical support to US Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals (MASH) units during the Vietnam War and Persian Gulf wars. He received multiple recognitions for his service including the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Achievement Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
Rich is survived by his daughter, Diedra Dowling and family of Alvin, TX, son, John Dowling and family of Houston, TX, stepson, Richard Stelwagen and family of Arlington, TX, twin brother, Robert Dowling and family of Boston, MA, brother, Paul Dowling of Bedford, MA, sister, Patricia Ann Dowling of Groveton, NH, and multiple nieces and nephews. Rich was predeceased by his wife, Kathleen Dowling, brothers, Peter Dowling and Kevin Dowling and sister, Diane Sutton Lancaster.
Services will be held at the Sunset Funeral Home (1701 Austin Hwy, San Antonio, TX 78218) on Thursday, December 22, 2022. Visitation will be from 12:00 PM to 12:30 PM with the funeral following from 12:30 PM to 1:00 PM. The committal service will be at the Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery (1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209) from 1:30 PM to 2:00 PM
