Rafael was born to Benito Barrera and Maria Ordaz, December 12, 1944, in Earth, Texas. He graduated from Memorial High School in Houston, Texas and received a Bachelors in Business Administration from Wayland Baptist University in 1993. He married Gloria Tienda in 1970, and retired to San Antonio, Texas. Together they raised two children.
He is survived by: his wife Gloria Barrera, son Javier Barrera and wife Roxane, and daughter Marisol Barrera. He also leaves to cherish his memory three grandchildren Joseph, Jacob, Juliette and one great granddaughter Illiana. He is also survived by Guadalupe, (Sister), Juan, (Brother),Aurora, (Sister) and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by Benito, (father), Maria, (mother), Domingo, (Brother), Pablo , (Brother), Benito (Brother), Yolanda, (Sister), and Delores, (Brother).
Rafael worked as a Seaman and Personnel Specialist for United States Navy for twenty-one years. He is also retired from the United States Post Office. He enjoyed documenting family genealogical history.
A memorial visitation for Rafael will be held Tuesday, February 20, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and the Rosary service will start at 7pm at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, TX 78218. A memorial mass will occur Wednesday, February 21, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at St Monica Catholic Church, 501 North St, Converse, TX 78109. A committal will occur Wednesday, February 21, from 1:15 PM to 1:45 PM at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd., San Antonio, TX 78209. Reception to follow at St Monica's Catholic Church.
