Maxine F. Matherson, age 96, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away peacefully at Legend Oaks Health Care Facility on February 1, 2022. She is survived by her son, Stephen Dale Matherson, his wife, Nancy, and grandson Steven Curtis, and great granddaughter Destini, all of San Antonio; granddaughter Catherine Ann Blackburn, her husband, Vallen, and great granddaughter Summer Daye, and great grandson Breck, all of Pleasant Grove, Utah; daughter Mary Catherine, and her husband, John, who reside in San Marcos, Texas; and her sister Darlene Reinig, who lives in Mason City, Iowa.
Maxine was born in Klemme, Iowa, and spent most of her childhood and teenage years helping her parents on the family farm. She graduated from Klemme High School in 1943. After a short marriage in Iowa, Maxine and her son, Stephen, moved to McAllen, Texas in 1948 where she married her second husband, James J. Matherson. They had one daughter, Mary Catherine. Maxine attend Pan American University in Edinburg, Texas, and received an Associate’s Degree.
Maxine and James divorced in 1964 but remained good friends for the duration of their lives. While living in McAllen, Maxine worked as an Administrative Assistant for the Texas Employment Commission, and as an Admin/Bookkeeper for Robert Buck and Associates architectural firm. In 1968, Maxine was transferred to Laredo, Texas with the architectural firm where she and her two children lived for two years. She was then transferred to San Antonio to the architectural firm’s home office where she worked as the Office Manager.
In 1975, Maxine accepted a civil service position with the Air Force. Her first position was at Laughlin AFB, Del Rio, Texas, and in September, 1980, she was transferred to Osan AFB South Korea, where she worked for the Commander of the 554th Red Horse Combat Civil Engineering Squadron. She also worked as their Squadron Historian, and as Chief Equal Employment Opportunity Counselor. In addition, she served the Korean community as the Chairperson for the Song Sim Orphanage for one year. In 1990, she was promoted to Administrative Assistant to the Wing Commander. Maxine spent 11 years in South Korea, and ended her civil service career at Brooks AFB, San Antonio in 1993.
In 1994, Maxine moved to the Sunbird Resort Community, a 55-plus active adult community in Chandler, Arizona, and was employed by the builder, Robson Communities. She also worked as a part-time tour guide for Especially for You Travel Company. While living at Sunbird, Maxine was the Chairperson for the Sunbird Singles Club for three years. In August, 2004, Maxine, moved back to the San Antonio area where she purchased a home in the suburb of Helotes. In 2018, she sold her home and moved to Discovery Village at Dominion, an independent living facility in San Antonio, where Maxine enjoyed spending time with all of her wonderful new friends. She attended a Tuesday night Bible study, was the Social Director of the Divas Red Hat Luncheon Club, a member of the Birthday Club, and Ladies Night Out Club. And she loved to play bingo and bunco with her friends.
Maxine attended Oak Hills Church in San Antonio where her favorite pastor, Max Lucado, was the senior pastor. She loved to read her Bible daily, as well as all of Lucado’s wonderful books. She also loved to watch all of the Billy Graham classic sermons on television.
At Maxine’s request, she was cremated and her ashes buried at the family plot in Klemme, Iowa. No memorial service was held.
Maxine was predeceased in death by her parents, Clarence and Maude Bachman, her sister Vivian who died in childbirth, brother Delbert and his wife, Ann, her brother Roger Bachman, and former husband, James J. Matherson.
