Mary Flanagan Monaco passed away peacefully at her home in San Antonio on Friday, May 30, 2014. Mary was 93 years old and was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Colonel Anthony W. Monaco, Jr. USAF(Ret.) Beloved mother of Meg Boumann (Robert), Pamela O’Connor(Hugh-deceased), Anthony W. Monaco, III (Linda), James T. Monaco (Vicki), Tina Monaco, Lawrence M. Monaco (Mi Kyong), Christa Monaco (Paul Bedore-deceased), David F. Monaco and proud grandmother of 16 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Mary was born April 3, 1921 in Rutland, VT. She graduated from St Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Hartford, CT with a degree in nursing and served as a registered nurse in the Army Air Corps. From 1942 to 1944 she accompanied wounded WWII soldiers flying from the east coast to hospitals across the U.S. She married Anthony W. Monaco, Jr. on November 21, 1944 and together they raised eight children. Mass will be said at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church 9883 Marbach Road on Thursday, June 5th at 10:00 a.m. Visitation will be on Friday, 6 June from 11:00 a.m. until noon at Sunset NW Funeral Home, 6321 Bandera Rd. Rosary will follow at 12:00 followed by interment at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd at 2:00 p.m. Memorial gifts may be made to Paralyzed Veterans of America at www.SupportVeterans.org.
