Mary Jo Boren was born July 25, 1930 in San Antonio and passed away on August 5, 2011 in Boerne. She was preceded in death by her son, William Bowers, and her father N.C. Sawyer, but is survived by her 103-year old mother, Iris. She is also survived by her loving husband Jim Sandy Boren, Sr. (Boerne); her siblings Ruth Jacobs and Tom Sawyer and their families; her children Bruce, Christy, Lisa and daughter-in-law Rhonda Bowers and their families; and grandchildren Guy and Yazmin
Bowers, as well as several beloved nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her husband's children Jimmy and Dayna, and their children Nicholas, Valerie, Grant and Emily. She graduated from Jefferson High School in San Antonio, where she was a Lasso and the Commander of the Corps. She attended Trinity University and The University of Texas at Austin, and spent many years living in Houston and Seguin before relocating to San Antonio several decades ago, where she
retired from the San Antonio Zoo as Director of Public Relations. Her time at the zoo gave her great pleasure, and she was able to take many trips overseas. Her other interests included a rabid love of the old Houston Oilers team, as well as many other sports teams that she supported. She also had a keen knowledge of history and current events.
After retirement, she moved to Boerne with her husband, Jim. Together, they volunteered for many years at the Hill Country Animal Shelter, and Mary Jo served on the Board of Directors of the Hill Country Animal League. The family wishes to thank the staff of Riverview Nursing Home in Boerne for their dedicated work and companionship during her valiant struggle with complications from Alzheimer's.
