Marvin Bernard Schavrien passed away peacefully on November 12, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 95. Born on August 12, 1929, in Brooklyn, New York, Marvin's journey through life was marked by dedication, service, and an unwavering commitment to his loved ones.
Marvin's early years in Brooklyn were filled with a variety of jobs that showcased his strong work ethic and resourcefulness. From selling shoes to delivering milk with a metal pull cart, he learned the value of hard work and perseverance. His education at Boston Tech High School in the airplane service course was completed with high regard from his classmates, who remembered him as a stellar fellow with a witty sense of humor.
Marvin's sense of duty led him to a distinguished career in the military, serving in the US Naval Reserves and the Army Air Corps. His expertise as a flight mechanic and flight engineer took him from Stewart AFB in New York to the critical operations of the Berlin Airlift in Burtonwood, England. His service continued across various bases, culminating in a proud 26-year career in the Air Force, having been a flight engineer on B-29, C-97, KC-97 and C-118 aircraft. It was during his service at Lake Charles AFB in Louisiana that he met his beloved wife, Earline, and together they embarked on a life filled with love, adventure, and family.
After his military career, Marvin continued to serve his community as a revenue officer in the petroleum division for the state of Louisiana and later as a dedicated volunteer for over 30 years at the Barksdale AFB retiree affairs office and base pharmacy. His generosity knew no bounds, especially after winning a million dollars at the Horseshoe casino in Louisiana, which he used to treat his family and continue his humble and thoughtful way of life.
Marvin's interests were as diverse as his career. He enjoyed the great outdoors, fishing, and hunting in his younger days. Alongside Earline, he was an avid jitterbug dancer and bowler. His green thumb was evident in the bountiful vegetable garden he tended, generously sharing the harvest with friends and family. Marvin and Earline's love for travel took them on numerous cruises and adventures, including a memorable visit to their son Steve's family in Thailand.
Those who knew Marvin will remember him as a loving, kind, and thoughtful man. His ability to plan and think ahead was unparalleled, a trait that served him well throughout his life and endeared him to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His love for his family was profound, and the special bond he shared with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren was a source of immense joy and will be a treasured legacy.
Marvin leaves behind a loving family who will miss him dearly: his devoted wife of 71 years, Earline; his sons Randy (wife Gail) and Steven (wife Connie); his sisters Marie McHugh, Rebecca Tonsberg, Renee Abel; his brothers Lee and Paul Schavrien; six grandchildren Erica, Scott, Nicole, Sarah, Laura, and Lisa; and nine great-grandchildren Chandler, Ashley, Abby, Emma, Ethan, Conley, Collette, Peyton, and Palmer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar Schavrien and Sophie Rosenfield, and his brother, William Schavrien.

As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we take comfort in knowing that his legacy will live on in the hearts and memories of those he touched.
