Marie Lydia Ring (Paradis) of San Antonio, Texas passed on Thursday, July 22, 2021 at the age of 84. She was born in Frenchville, Maine in 1937 to her parents, Pierre Paradis and Bertha Paradis (née Ringuette).
In school, Marie was very involved in sports including being the captain of her basketball team at St. Agatha High School. After graduating from St. Agatha and beginning nursing school, Marie enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1958, attending the Army Service Medical School at Fort Hood, Texas. It was there at a Fort Hood hospital that she met her husband, Marvin L. Ring, whom she married in January 1960. Upon leaving the Army, Marie focused her attention on raising their three children before re-entering the medical field by working many roles in a variety of doctors’ offices and ultimately working in the Cath Lab at the Audie Murphy VA Hospital in San Antonio before retiring.
Marie had many personal interests including sewing, crocheting, reading, and NBA basketball – especially her beloved San Antonio Spurs. She was also an active member of many church parishes all over the United States and the world. A special passion of hers was to make sure that her children and grandchildren were busy and had opportunities. She would sign them up for a variety of sports or performing arts, and she would always be there, often all day, to cheer them on as they competed and performed. Being very generous and welcoming, Marie and Marvin’s door was always open, and their home was a warm and friendly gathering place for their extended families. They entertained and took care of many visitors and longer-term guests, both relatives and close family friends, over the years.
Marie is preceded in death by her loving husband, Marvin; her parents, Pierre and Bertha; her sisters, Claire Saucier, Geraldine Paradis, and Jacqueline Paradis; and her brother, Reginald Paradis. She is survived by her sisters, Carmen Lamontagne and Bernadette “Rita” Thibeault; her children, Mynda Taylor and her husband Kent of San Antonio, Texas, Marian Keith and her husband Casey of La Vernia, Texas, and Marvin Ring, Jr. and his wife, Julie of San Antonio, Texas; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family.
The family of Marie Ring would like to extend a special thank you to the family of Jean Paul and Odette Ouelette and everyone at Four Seasons Hospice.
Family and friends are welcome to attend services for Marie on Friday, August 13 at Sunset Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 8 AM with a funeral service at 9 AM. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association or Disabled American Veterans (DAV).
