Maria Otila Cortez, born 10 December 1933, in Edinburg, Texas, left to be with the Lord on 17 October 2020, at the age of 86. She was preceded in death by her husband, Miguel Luna Cortez; daughter, Maria Angelica; parents, Rafael and Delfina Gomez; sister, Lydia Silva; brothers: Rafael, Guadalupe, and Rene; and son-in-law William. She is survived by her brother, Emilio; daughters: Blanca, Janie (Raul), Isabel, and Maria (Victor); sons: Michael Jr., Fernando (Gloria), Armando (Mari), and Rene (Laura); Seventeen (17) grandchildren, thirteen (13) great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended relatives and friends.
Maria was a beautiful, sincere, and nurturing person who opened her door to help many in need. She used her voice in the local community, schools, and Texas State Capitol to mandate educational resources for deaf and special-needs children. Maria was her family’s and neighbors’ Matriarch.
Due to COVID health risks, private services will be held at Funeraria Del Angel Trevino at 2525 Palo Alto Rd on Monday, 26 October 2020, at 7:00 p.m. for the Rosary. On Tuesday, 27 October 2020, a Mass will be held at St. Bonaventura Church on 1918 Palo Alto Rd with internment to follow in San Jose Cemetery.
All services will be able to be viewed via live streaming on the funeral home's Facebook page.
