Fleming was the son of Leon O. Sr. and Frances Fleming, born April 5, 1933 in what was then the municipal hospital on Sam Houston Street. He attended John R. Lewis Elementary, Reagan Junior High School, and graduated from Newman High School in 1950. After earning a bachelor’s degree in journalism from North Texas State College, he served 1955-57 as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force. He began a career in newspapers and public information in 1957, holding positions in San Antonio, San Angelo, Lubbock, Abilene, Denton and Glenwood Springs, CO. He was editor of the Reporter 1960-61. He was also on staff of Texas State Technical Institute in Sweetwater 1977-80. Fleming earned a master’s degree in Spanish from North Texas State in 1972. A Presbyterian since childhood, he served on the Session of Northwood Presbyterian Church in San Antonio for six years. His genealogical forebears include the Fleming, Pugh, Webster and Redifer families.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Gayle (Crawford) Fleming, whom he married in 1980, and several cousins, nieces and a nephew.
Services will be held at Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home in Lewisville, TX on Tuesday June 2, 2015 at 2:00pm with internment to follow at a later date at Flower Mound cemetery.
