José A. Salinas, 57, passed away November 4, 2012 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born September 27, 1955, in Laredo, Texas, and grew up in Roma, Texas. José was a graduate of Roma High School, of Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and of The University of Texas Medical Branch – Galveston, Texas.
He is preceded in death by his parents César Salinas and Margarita G. Salinas, and his brother, Javier R. Salinas.
José is survived by his daughters Jasmín A. Salinas of San Antonio, and Karina S. Barlow (Wesley), and his grandson, Jack Barlow, of D’Hanis, Texas. He is also survived by his brothers Felipe C. Salinas of McAllen, Luis E. Salinas of Austin, Roberto A. Salinas of Roma, and Daniel F. Salinas of Austin, and his sisters, Marta Salinas-Hovar of McAllen, and Mercedes Salinas Espinosa of McAllen.
José was a board-certified family physician employed by WellMed Medical Group of San Antonio, where he was Senior Medical Director for San Antonio and the Greater Texas Region, as well as a practicing physician for WellMed at Greenway Park in San Antonio. He formerly had a private medical practice in Hondo, Texas. He is remembered by his countless patients for his empathy and high standard of care, and by his colleagues for his dedication to find ways of providing the best possible health care in a complex and constantly changing environment.
José was also an avid listener of music, counting several Austin and San Antonio area musicians among his friends. He enjoyed traveling, watching a wide variety of television and film genres, attending and recording concerts, trying new beers and chocolates, and making films with his children. José also extended his childhood interests as a lifelong collector of comic books, Star Trek memorabilia, and delighted in sharing these interests with his family and loved ones.
José was a loving father, grandfather, brother, and uncle to his extended family, who will greatly miss his wry humor, generosity of spirit, and keen insight.
The family thanks Carlos O. Hernandez, MD, Richard Whittaker, MD, Geraldo Ramos, MD and best friend and caregiver Sharon Kaminski for the friendship and generous support they always extended to José, and to Justo Cisneros, MD, and Zulfaqqar M. Jaffar, MD, for the outstanding care they provided to him.
Funeral arrangements will be handled by Sunset Northwest Funeral Home, 6321 Bandera Road, San Antonio, Texas 78238. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at 10 a.m. Burial of his remains will follow at a later date at Queen of Peace Cemetery in Roma. Donations in José’s memory to Stand Up To Cancer (www.standup2cancer.org) are encouraged in lieu of flowers.
