Jose M. Hernandez born on February 19, 1921 in San Antonio Texas was called to be with the Lord on April 17, 2015 at the age of 94. He is preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Garcia Hernandez; daughter Rosa Ramos; infant children, Jose and Josephine Hernandez; parents, Lazaro and Juanita Hernandez. He is survived by daughters; Lupe Small, Isabel Tesillo (Dave) and Alicia Martinez (Jesse); sons, Joe Hernandez, Lazaro Hernandez (Becky) and John Hernandez (Xanthia); 18 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 26 great great grandchildren; sister, Janie Rodriguez; daughter-in-law, Minnie Puente; son-in-law, Rogelio Ramos; also, numerous nieces and nephews. He was a loving husband, brother, father and grandpa. He valued the importance of family and family traditions. He worked very hard all his life to provide for his family. He had a wonderful sense of humor whom he shared with all the people he met. He always had a joke, funny story or a dream to tell. As a youth he worked in the family bakery. He was a baker and a delivery driver. In 1942, he enlisted in the Army and served in the Liberation of the Phillipines. He was a member of the 96th Division which was nicknamed, “The Deadeyes.” To the young people of today, he would say, “You have to serve your country, do your duty and save our democracy.” Mr. Hernandez also worked at Rainbo Bakery for 31 years. This is where he met a coworker, Ramiro Lara, and they began a lifelong friendship. He was a member of the Greatest Generation, a proud WWII U.S. Army Veteran and a lifelong member of VFW Post 8936. A man of great wisdom, he will be greatly missed. A Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Sunday, April 26, 2015 at Trevino Funeral Home, 226 Cupples Rd. with a Rosary at 7:00 pm. A Procession will depart from the funeral home on Monday, April 27, 2015 at 9:15 a.m. for a 9:45 a.m. Mass of the Resurrection at St. John Berchmans’ Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with military honors. The Family would like to express their gratitude to Optum Hospice, especially RN Gloria and CNA Hector. They provided excellent care. The family would like to give very special thanks to RN Mayra and RN Ginger, who provided the very best care with love and compassion.
