Jorgen E. Hoberg, Jr. passed away at his home in San Antonio, Texas on Saturday, May 27, 2023, at the age of 68. Jorgen was surrounded by family and loved ones throughout his life and in his final time with us. Jorgen was preceded in death by his father Jorgen Hoberg, mother Margaret (Bradford) Hoberg, and sister Donna. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sandra, son Brian and wife Amber, daughter Katie and husband Chris Courtney, grandchildren Brendan, Aubrey, Brynleigh, Berlyn, Cambree, Drew, Emerson, and step-grandson Dylan. Jorgen was born in San Antonio, Texas, where he lived his entire life. He graduated from Thomas Edison High School in 1972 and attended The University of Texas at San Antonio earning a Bachelor's of Science in Education with a minor in Kinesiology.
Jorgen worked at City Public Service (CPS) for many years before becoming a physical education coach at St. Gregory the Great Catholic School later transitioning to full-time teaching in History, Music, Computer Literacy, and Drafting for 35 years. As a Christian, Jorgen served the Lord for 40 years as a church deacon and minister of music at Allena Baptist, Alamo Heights Baptist, Elmendorf First Baptist, and Oak Ridge Baptist Church. Jorgen was a talented guitar player and shared this passion throughout his life as a music teacher and minister of music. Jorgen loved being surrounded by family and especially his grandkids. He was known for starting “snowball fights” at Christmas with his grandkids after presents had been opened and wrapping paper was freely available. Jorgen loved history, astronomy, fishing, hunting, and working on cars, especially his Ford trucks throughout his life.
Jorgen directly touched the hearts and minds of thousands of students with many pursuing education as a career due to his dedication and love of teaching. As a devout Christian, he would remind those around him of the blessings Christ has provided and the importance of God in his own life. Jorgen was proud of his Danish heritage and showed this by ensuring the family always remained strong and together in Christ. Jorgen often spoke of his love for his family in Minnesota with numerous cousins and would visit with them on vacation or through phone conversations. He was beloved by all and people recall him as being a faithful, strong, and loving man who would freely talk or help in any way he could.
A memorial service will be held for Jorgen at Oak Ridge Baptist Church (10915 Vance Jackson Rd., San Antonio, TX) on Saturday, June 24 2023 at 1:00 PM with a reception to follow in the Shockley Family Life Center.
