John spent most of his life in San Antonio, Texas where, in 1945, he married the love of his life, Norma Jenell Humble. John was very proud to have served his country and felt extremely fortunate to be a pilot and member of the Army Air Corps during WWII. He flew several aircraft including the B-29, B-17, B-24, P-40, P-39, P-51, and gliders. John was awarded the American Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Following military service, John worked for Southwestern Bell in San Antonio for 39 years.
Norma predeceased John in 2013. He and Norma are survived by their daughters Kim Turos Gilleland (John) of Berkeley, California and Kay Turos Thomas (Stephen) of Austin, Texas and numerous nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family extends sincere appreciations to the staff at Juniper Village at Spicewood Summit, Hospice Austin, and Home Instead San Antonio.
A family graveside service will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio.
