In 1970 and 1971, John was President of the Schertz-Cibolo Clemens High School Athletic Booster Club. As he wanted to advocate team support and enthusiasm from the parents and students of the high school, he endeavored to obtain the first and only live mascot for the school. A six month old wild buffalo was donated to the school from John W. Mecom, Jr. Wild Life Refuge in Laredo, Texas. John worked and tamed the wild buffalo, so it could sit on the sidelines at all of the home football games. The Junior Class selected the name “Samson” for the exceptional mascot. During his military career, John attended every computer school available in the Air Force; from computer operator, programmer in several languages, to data systems, analysis and design. Not only did he challenge himself by taking such difficult classes, he always had outstanding results and test scores. In April 1973, John was nominated as the PACAF (Pacific Air Force) nominee for the prestigious position of Chief Master Sergeant of the entire Air Force. He retired, from the US Air Force on June 1, 1974, with 23 years of service. He went on to work for Frost National Bank and retired as Vice President of Automated Customer Service.
