John M. Campbell, Jr., entered eternal life on September 11, 2015 at the age of 83. He was born in Elizabeth, NJ on December 29, 1931 to John, Sr and Elizabeth Campbell. John, a resident of San Antonio since the age of 18, proudly served in the US Air Force, the US Navy Reserves and was a Veteran of the Korean War. He continued his service for 35 years as a Civilian at Kelly AFB where he negotiated contracts for the government.
John was a long time member of the Alamo Heights Optimist Club and was recognized last year for a lifetime of outstanding leadership and dedicated service to the Club. For many years during the Christmas season, you could find him at the corner of Austin Hwy. and Broadway where he proudly devoted his time to the Alamo Heights Optimist Christmas tree lot raising money to support the youth of San Antonio. An avid runner in his adult years, John loved to run (and later walk) all over Brackenridge park. He trained there for the San Antonio marathon which he ran at the age of 51. John also had a passion for history and culture. He frequently spent time in downtown San Antonio with his grandchildren and recently took history classes at the University of the Incarnate Word until age 81. A loyal and dedicated Spurs fan, John took pride in the fact that he and his wife, Emma, were season ticket holders for over 30 years. John was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He considered his family and the legacy he left behind to be his greatest accomplishment.
John was preceded in death by his parents and his three brothers, Robert, Charles and Peter. He is survived by his "darling" wife of 60 years Emma, his daughters Jennifer Shows, Susan Skinner, Laurie Haushill and her husband Mark, Karen (Deedee) Meloni and her husband Robert; his grandchildren, Eric Shows, Stephanie Luschen (Klent), Jason Shows (Ashli), Ashley Conrad (Neil), Amy Rose (Brandon), Matthew and Meredith Haushill, Kristin, Kayla, Brian and Kara Meloni, seven great-grandchildren and his sister Elizabeth Ann Wisk and her husband Charles of Rahway, NJ.
