Joe Renteria Luna: life and history. He was a beloved husband, loving father, proud Grandpa, Brother, and Godfather, loyal soldier, amazing electrician, an avid educator, and a missionary servant of the Lord as well as many other roles. He was born on January 24, 1933 and passed away peacefully on June 14, 2020 at the age of 87. He just celebrated 64 years of marriage with his beautiful bride, Herlinda Gonzalez Luna on May 27th. He was the father of five studious and talented children: Norma Chamberlain (Howard), Sylvia Luna, Josie Rendon, Dr. Joseph R. Luna (Yolanda Gutierrez) and Louie Gonzales Luna (Irma). He has 14 wonderful grandchildren: Katherine Ann Luna Lawson, Lisa Marie Fox, Marsha Nicole Fox, Dr. Pablo Cortez Teveni III, Natalie Marie McDonald PA, Dr. Laura Maricela Teveni, Michelle Hernandez, Miguel Cristobal Teveni, Janet D.Hernandez-Ayers, Jerry F. Rendon II., Jacob M. Rendon, Isaac Joseph Luna, Adam Quinn Luna, Christopher Joseph Luna and 19 great grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents Jose Luna and Natalia Luna of San Antonio as well as his brothers, Juan and Jesse Luna and sisters, Theresa Renteria Hughes (Ruben), Micaela Torres, and Elva Alonzo. He is survived by his sisters: Yolanda Luna Martinez, Helen Luna, and Maria Sanchez (Carlos). He grew up on the Westside of San Antonio and graduated from Lanier HS in 1952. He proudly served his country as a US Marine from 1952-1956 during the Korean War. He later worked as an Aviation Electrician at various companies at the San Antonio International Airport and Grand Prairie,TX. While doing his family duties, he graduated from St. Mary’s University (Class of ‘76) with a Bachelor's Degree in Spanish. He was an active parishioner of St. Anthony de Padua Church since 1956 and was involved with the ACTS Ministry, Eucharistic Minister, Guadalupano, Spanish Choir, and especially senior activities like Bingo. After retiring from his Aviation career, he started another endeavor as an educator in Pearsall, TX. After this time, he became an influential substitute teacher in various districts in San Antonio. Previously, in 1983, he experienced the Cursillo Movement in the Catholic Faith, which led to other Christian ministries. He was especially gifted with others while engaging in Prison ministries like Kairos and Bill Glass Ministries. Also he truly loved partaking in many family functions like weddings, quinceaneras, barbecues, and plenty of birthday parties and dinners. A couple of his favorite sports he competed in were bowling and softball leagues with company teams. He was overly excited about cheering on the Championship Spurs. Lastly, two truly above and beyond events that really brought a smile to his face were to dance the night away with his sweetheart “Linda” and to play a homemade game board (Marbles/Canicas) and Dominos with anyone who was willing to take him on! (This included his wife, kids and any grandkids or great grandkids) He will truly be missed! Funeral services will be conducted by Sunset Funeral Home on Austin Hwy where flowers or other condolences that are listed there on the website can be sent (www.sunsetfuneralhomesa.com ) and due to COVID 19 seating will be limited for the Rosary and the Mass. Live Streaming will be available on the day of the services (Rosary). After the Mass Mr. Luna will be taken to Fort Sam Cemetery and will be laid to rest which will be open to his surviving wife and their surviving children and spouses only (by Fort Sam ordinance).
