Joan Frances Reed, beloved wife, sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother was called home into God’s loving hands on May 27, 2017 at the age of 92. She reunites in Heaven with her beloved husband, Joseph Wesley Reed; parents, Clarence and Selina Marie Pequignot; sisters, Virginia and Margie; brother, Jimmy; and grandson, Tyler. Much loved, she will be greatly missed by her six daughters and their families, as well as her brother Tom, nine surviving grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Joan was born in 1924 in Ohio to Clarence & Marie Pequignot and was one of five children. She joined the Navy in 1947 as a nurse where she met the love of her life, Joe, while stationed in California. She resigned her commission in order to marry him and was a proud military wife and mother. She faithfully followed him on his deployments to Ohio, Japan, Arkansas, France, Virginia, Alaska, and finally Texas. She was a strong, capable mother who managed everything stateside while he was serving his country with two tours of duty in Vietnam and one in Korea. She enjoyed travel, gardening and reading. She really loved her Catholic church because of her strong faith in God. But most of all, she loved her family and especially enjoyed the company of her great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2017 from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel, with a funeral service to begin at 2:00 pm. Interment will be at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Arkansas Children’s Hospital (www.archildrens.org) or the charity of your choice. The family would like to thank Brookdale of Alamo Heights, Hope Hospice (especially Christina) and Tracey, Debra and Desiree for their compassion and excellent care of Joan in her last days.
