Jesus enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1956. After Basic training at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, TX, he received Electronic Training at Keesler AFB, Biloxi, Mississippi and graduated as an Airborne Radar Technician in Charleston, North Carolina, he spent a year and a half working on B-47 and B-52 bombers at Little Rock AFB. In 1959, Jesus was transferred to Mysawa AFB in Japan where he worked for the next four and a half years. There he met and married his wife Utako. He returned to the U.S. in 1963 and cross trained in precision measuring equipment in California, Colorado and South Carolina. In 1970, while stationed at Clark AFB in the Philippines, Jesus was given a TDY assignment in Vietnam where he calibrated smart bombs. After Vietnam, he was assigned to Johnson AFB, Japan. After the death of his wife in 1973, Jesus and his children returned to the U.S. and was stationed at Laughlin AFB in Del Rio, Texas. He remained there until he retired in 1977 after devoting 21 years to the United States Air Force.
After retiring from the Air Force, Jesus went on to work for Tektronix as a Lead Electronics Technician in Houston, Dallas, El Paso and Juarez, Mexico for the next twenty years. After retiring in 1993, he built a home in Del Rio, Texas and purchased some land which he used for hunting.
In his spare time, Jesus enjoyed coaching little league baseball, hunting, fishing, camping and was a member of the San Felipe Lions Club for many years.
Jesus was preceded in death by his wife, Utako Hernandez, his mother Evangelina Castaneda and his brothers Roberto Rodriquez and Vicente Castaneda. He is survived by his children: Reymundo Hernandez, Linda Hernandez and A.J. Hernandez, his siblings: Jorge Escobar, Manuel Castaneda Jr., Clara Castaneda, Maria Tovar, and Evangelina Hernandez. He also leaves behind three granddaughters and one great granddaughter.
A visitation will be held on February 15, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Trevino Funeral Home, 2525 Palo Alto Road, San Antonio, TX 78211 with a rosary to be recited at 12:30 p.m. Interment will be at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.
