Irma Guerrero, a beloved matriarch known for her generosity and dedication to community service, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. Born to Flavia Cuellar Gutierrez and Geronimo Gutierrez, Irma's life was marked by a deep commitment to enriching the lives of others.
In the late 1950s, Irma organized the inaugural Latinos Coronation Ball at Brownsville High School, where she was crowned queen—an early testament to her leadership and community spirit. Throughout her life, she continued to champion cultural events, including the first Christmas play at the Brownsville Courthouse, which showcased her creativity and love for bringing joy to others.
Irma was an active member of the Brownsville Civic Center's Mr. & Mrs. Dance Club in the late 1960s and early 1970s, fostering lasting friendships and community bonds. Her passion for health and wellness led her to establish a Women's Exercise Club at Texas Southmost College, where she inspired others with her rigorous workouts and dedication to fitness.
Her professional journey was equally impactful, serving with distinction at Kelly-GS5, Lackland AFB, USDA in Weslaco, Veterans Affairs in San Antonio, and the Social Security Administration. Irma's dedication to public service was a reflection of her caring nature and desire to support those in need.
Irma Guerrero not only served her community well, but after committing her life to her Savior Jesus Christ, she wholeheartedly lived a life of servanthood. Throughout her 40 years of living for God, she served her local church in many areas and capacities. It was through Castle Hills United Pentecostal Church, Templo de Salvación, Hope Center/Centro de Esperanza that her years were filled with serving and loving people. She joyfully filled the roles of prayer warrior, Bible study teacher, evangelism director, ladies auxiliary director, pianist for the Spanish Church, and of course, her voice could be heard as she sang in the choir.
Outside of her career and community endeavors, Irma enjoyed hosting Bunko 'Dress Up' Parties and instilling a love for the arts and sports in her children. She cherished moments dressing her daughters alike for special occasions like Charro Days and took pride in teaching them ballet, folkloric dance, and golf, as well as the art of landscaping.
Irma is preceded in death by her daughter, Norma Lourdes Guerrero; her father, Geronimo Gutierrez; her mother, Flavia Cuellar Gutierrez; and her brother, Jerry Gutierrez. She is survived by her five children: Nydia Irma Guerrero, Nora Guerrero Flores, Nelda Bockelman, Norma Noemí Guerrero, and Arnold Guerrero.
