Gary B. Jones was born in Hutchinson, Kansas to Homer Jones and Birdie Naomi Hoskinson. He was the second of 12 children raised by Homer and Mae Jones in Wray, Colorado. The family lived on a farm and the school age children attended North Independence, a one-room school house northwest of Wray from the 1st grade until middle of the 5th grade. Anyone who knew him would agree he was no farmer but he did do chores on the farm as was required of sons and daughters during that time. The family moved to Laird, Colorado and Gary graduated from Laird High School (a building with two stories where 1st grade through High School was taught) in 1952.
He enlisted in the United States Air Force after high school. He met Bobbie Dean Edwards in Lubbock, Texas and they were married February 21, 1958. They have a son, Gary Jr. and a daughter, Rhonda.
While in the Air Force Gary got his Bachelor Degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and was subsequently commissioned as an officer in the Air Force. His time in the Air Force took him to places all over the world, including Thailand, Korea, and Germany (where Rhonda was born), as well as over the United States. He served as Chief of Military Police and retired from the Air Force after 26 years of service. He worked for Southwestern Bell/ATT Telephone Company in various management positions until his retirement from the phone company after 13 years. Gary and Bobbie settled down for retirement in San Antonio, Texas.
Gary was always a very active person. He enjoyed golf, basketball, bowling, racquetball, and swimming and he continued to bowl and swim as was able.
He attended Trinity Baptist church faithfully and was an active member. He was a Deacon at the church and was ready and willing to help in whatever way he was needed. Gary was passionate about helping senior citizens in need, whether it was rides to and from appointments, hospital visitations, or searching for options to help resolve a variety of issues. His specialty was researching insurance and government programs and helping with paperwork and administrative issues. Gary was a loving husband, and awesome Dad, a good brother, and a friend to all. He lived his faith.
The “Daily Dilly” was a daily e-mail service that Gary started years ago to share things he found funny, wise, profound, encouraging, or useful. Many recipients of his “daily dilly” will miss this little ray of sunshine each day in their inbox. He will be sorely missed by his family and his church family.
He is survived by his wife Bobbie, 2 children: son Gary Jr and wife Paula, Daughter Rhonda; 2 grandchildren: Courtney (Jones) Beall and her husband Scott; Ashlynn Jones and her fiancé Austin Lapointe; brother Quentin Jones, brother Milton Jones and wife Venetta; brother Wallace Jones; brother Allen Jones and wife Judy; brother Sam Jones; brother Dave Jones and wife Barbara, brother Denis Jones and wife Deena, sister Carol Newton and husband Dean along with numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his brother Galen Jones and sisters Janet Walker and Kay Yost.
A memorial is planned for 10/25/2021 12:30 PM at Trinity Baptist Church in San Antonio, Texas followed by a military interment of his ashes at 2:15 PM at Ft. Sam Houston.
