He attended Fox Tech High School and then joined the United State Air Force and was stationed at the North American Air Defense Command in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was discharged in 1965 and gained employment with the Pueblo Army Depot, Pueblo, Colorado where he began his Federal Civil Service career. He remained there and attended the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado, and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree.
He continued his career and attained several Federal high-level positions in Colorado. He later relocated to Texas and served his last 19 years of civil service with the United States Immigration & Naturalization Service, where he reached the highest point of his career as Deputy Assistant Regional Director for Inspection in Dallas, Texas. One of his most memorable assignments was when he was assigned to the security detail for Pope John Paul II in 1999. Shortly thereafter, he retired with 36 years of service in San Antonio.
He was a former member of Post 8111 and a current member of Post 1533, Veteran of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed being with friends who considered him as a happy and outgoing person. He liked sports, especially watching the Spurs at the post with his friends. He also cherished riding his Kubota tractor. Although he has passed away from this life, his caring, giving, fun spirit will continue to live with all of us forever.
He is preceded in death by his mother Elvira Barrientos Garcia, father Francisco Guerra Sr. and sister Lucia Guerra Smith.
He is survived by his two sons Lawrence Lee Guerra of Las Vegas, Nevada. and Eric Edward Guerra of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Also, his sister Olivia Huitt from Elmendorf, Texas, Fiance Rosalinda Valdez from San Antonio, Texas. His nephews and nieces Oscar Amos, San Antonio, Texas, Luis Gallardo, Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Rosalinda Besill from Fort Worth, Texas. Jessie Flores both of San Antonio. Texas, and Javier Flores of Elmendorf, Texas.
On Wednesday, September 8, family and friends will meet at St. Anthony Mary Claret Catholic Church – 1650 Roft Road 78253 – for a Visitation beginning at 10:00 AM. A Rosary will be recited at 11:00 AM, and the Mass will begin at 11:30 AM. Burial will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 1:15 PM.
