Born October 30, 1938, Federico Ricardo Garcia, Jr. entered the gates of heaven peacefully on November 25, 2011. Celebrating his 73rd birthday this year with his closest friends and surrounded by his loving family on Thanksgiving Day, Fred lived a wonderful life as a devoted family man and friend. Not only did he serve honorably in the U.S. Navy from 1955-1964, he spent his life in dedication to the service of his country retiring as a Computer Scientist from the U.S. Air Intelligence Agency Security Command with 40 years of distinguished civil service. He graduated from Martin High School in Laredo, TX and Texas A&I University in Kingsville, TX.
Fred shared his life experiences with others through his extensive travels around the world frequently taking his wife and family along. He was an extraordinarily gifted intellectual who was fluent in all of the romantic languages, as well as a former member of Mensa. He was a handsome gentleman, impeccable dresser, avid reader, passionate student, exceptional teacher, wise story teller and enthusiastic food lover. He was proud of his culture and community, actively becoming a member of Barrio Reunion Laredo Club and the S.A. Laredo Breakfast Club. Living in Leon Valley for the last 40 years, he was honored to have been a former King Leo for the Leon Valley Kingsmen, a former member of Toastmasters and a leader of the former Laredo Club of San Antonio. He has always passionately followed his favorite team the Dallas Cowboys, and was a proud season ticket holder for many years.
Survived by his loving wife of 50 years Eva Serna Garcia; his daughter Carla and her husband Tom Bowers; his son and namesake Fred III; his grandchildren Jackie Bowers, Stephanie and her husband Jacob Trevino, and Thomas Bowers, Jr.; and the lights of his life, great grandchildren Lacey Elrod and Jacob Marley Trevino. He is also survived by several sister in laws, a brother in law, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by parents Federico and Olivia Romo Garcia; his brother Dagoberto; his sisters and their husbands Olivia and Jose Luis Cantu, and Sylvia and Marcelino Martin.
The family will receive guests at Funeraria Del Angel Roy Akers, at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 6, 2011 for a visitation followed by a Rosary being recited by Deacon Bennie Garcia at 7:00 p.m. A funeral procession will depart the funeral home at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, December 7, 2011 to St. Luke's Catholic Church for a Mass in his honor at 10:00 a.m. Immediately following, the Patriot Guard Riders will accompany him to his final resting place for his burial ceremony at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 11:45 a.m. With great respect and honor, the pallbearers will be his grandson Thomas Bowers, Jr., granddaughter's husband Jacob Trevino, nephews Jorge Garcia, Jose Luis Cantu, Abelardo Pena and Godson Alberto Pena.
Honorary pallbearers: Homer Rodriguez, Deacon Bennie Garcia, Irma (Kitty) Rodriguez Wollen, Tomas (Tino) Gonzalez, Ray Chapa, Walter Herbeck, Mario Salinas, Armando Laurel, Alfonso (Toti) and Juan (Tapo) Aguillar, Raul (Mano) and Gabriel Palacios, Ray Castro, Tomas Rodriguez, Wilber Hoelsher, Richard De Leon, all members of the S.A. Laredo Breakfast Club, the Barrio Reunion Laredo Club A,B and C Teams and Freddy Ybanez-Captain of the Patriot Guard Riders and his fellow veterans.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests Memorial Masses in his honor at a church of choice or a donation to a charity of choice.
