Esther was born on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1927, in Seguin, Texas to Francisco Saldivar Gonzales and Sara Cantu Escamilla. Her father was a native from Stockdale, Texas while Sara was from Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico. Esther's siblings included three brothers, all WW II veterans, Ezekiel, Israel and Ruben who died this past year at age 95.
Esther was a homemaker while her husband, also a veteran of WW II, retired from civil service after 35 years at Kelly AFB. He preceded her in death by thirty years.
Esther had a full life raising her seven children, Tom Hernandez (Bonnie), Armandina H. Garcia (Mario), Mario Hernandez (Beatrice), Leonardo Hernandez (Estela), RoseMarie H. Bouchard (Bill), Roger Hernandez (Justin Moreau) and Esther H. Royston (Clark).
She devoted much of her time and energy helping raise twelve grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. She was a master caregiver at her home to elderly family members, including her father, one of her brothers and her husband. Her house on Summit was the gathering place for decades of the entire extended family. Esther is the epitome of the greatest generation. She will be greatly missed, and her passing is truly the end of a generation....the greatest generation!
