Ernest S. Arredondo died early Sunday morning, August 21, 2011. He was 89 years of age. He was born on December 14, 1921, in San Antonio, Texas, where he lived most of his life. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corp as a “flying sergeant”. After military service, he started a trucking business transporting fruit and vegetables all over the southern and western US. Most of his career was spent as a broker for Mendez Brothers Produce where he worked for 42 years.
Ernest was a very loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. Much of his life was dedicated to helping people in need which led him and wife Caroline being awarded honorary membership in Rho Beta Gamma Fraternity, St. Mary’s University. He and his wife Caroline Garza Arredondo enjoyed 66 years of marriage with education being a key component in the upbringing of their children. He is predeceased by his parents Angelina and Antonio, wife Caroline, brothers Fito and Antonio, and sister, Mary. He is survived by his daughter Sylvia and husband Wilt Shaw, Ernie Arredondo and wife Carie, Michael Arredondo and wife Jennifer, and Jerry Arredondo and wife Sandy; grandchildren David (Patti) Shaw, Geoffrey (Paula) Shaw, Stephanie (Herbert) Guzman, Amy Hunt, Anna Adams, Derick Arredondo, Ethan Arredondo, Aubrey Arredondo, Ashley (Ryan) Arredondo Hillyer, Jason Arredondo, Rachel Caroline Arredondo, eleven great grandchildren, sister-in-law Minnie Spruce, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The family is greatly indebted for the love, care and support given by Martha Chavez and by Josie Castillo. We would like also to thank Dr. Shannon Lopez and her staff for their extraordinary compassion and professionalism. Visitation will be held 5-9 PM, Wednesday, August 24, 2011, with a 7 PM Rosary at Sunset Northwest Funeral home. Mass of the Resurrection will be at 12 noon, Thursday, August 25, 2011, at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the charity of your choice.
