Emily “June” Frazer, cherished mother, grandmother and great grandmother, special education teacher for 31 years, and San Antonio resident for nearly 60, passed away June 2 in Dallas. Born in St. Louis, MO on June 3, 1923, she was the daughter of Thomas and Ethel Whalen. At 19, she met Bob Frazer, who was stationed with the Army Air Corps at nearby Jefferson Barracks Military Post. They married July 11, 1943. Their son was born while Bob was overseas.
After the war, June and her family moved to Bryan, Texas, so Bob could resume his studies at the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas (now Texas A&M University). After graduation they moved to San Antonio, where Bob taught at Breckenridge High.
Their daughter was born in SA in 1949 and in 1950, the family moved to Commerce, Texas, where Bob took a position with East Texas State Teachers College (Texas A&M-Commerce). While there, June earned her teaching degree. In 1955 the family moved to San Antonio, where Bob took a position as Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of San Antonio (which he served for 20 years) and June started teaching elementary school for the then new Northeast ISD.
In 1960 June earned her master’s degree in special education at Lady of the Lake College. She specialized in language, learning and emotional disabilities and became one of NEISD’s first special education teachers. Adored by her students, June viewed teaching as a calling and opportunity to serve children.
June enjoyed reading, going to movies and travel, particularly to Estes Park, Colorado, where she and her husband were frequent summer residents.
Preceded by her husband’s death in 2007, June is survived by her son, Dr. Robert L. “Bob” Frazer, Jr., and daughter Susan Garden; four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
Visitation is planned for Friday, June 8, from 6-7:30 pm, with a rosary to follow, at Sunset Memorial Chapel in San Antonio, 1701 Austin Highway. A funeral mass will be Saturday, June 9, from 10:30-11:30 am at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 8134 Blanco Rd., followed by a reception in the Family Center.
