Dorothy M. “Dottie” Smith-Fowler, age 81, passed away on July 10, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas. She was born in Tallahassee, Florida on March 2, 1943. She grew up with a love for God and music. Upon graduating from FAMU High School, she married her first husband, Lorenzo Smith, and had her two boys, Ron and Lorenzo Jr. They then moved to San Antonio, Texas, where Dottie lived the rest of her life.
While starting her new life in San Antonio, Dottie became a devoted wife and a dedicated mother. She took Ron and Lorenzo to weekly Sunday church service and introduced them to musical instruments. Dottie re-gave her life to Christ and was baptized on Dec. 14, 1974, at Landed Dr. Church of Christ, where she also dedicated her two boys. Dottie went on to graduate college in San Antonio and start her professional career in finance and law.
Dottie went on to get remarried to her second husband, John H. Fowler, who she was married to until his untimely death. During this time, her love for traveling and becoming a flourishing businesswoman took place. She owned and operated D and J Trucking Service, Dottie’s Daycare, and Dottie’s Tax and Notary Service. She went on to work transportation for NEISD, where she retired.
Dottie was a woman of integrity, kindness, generosity, and love, but most importantly, she was a woman of God. She left a lasting impact on everyone who knew her.
She was an active member of her church. From working in the finance office, becoming a pastor’s assistant, to playing piano and sewing outfits for all the kids at children’s church. However, her love for music was unmatched. She loved to listen to different genres and play all sorts of instruments she could get her hands on. Bass guitar, lead guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, ukulele, piano, and harmonica, she has played them all.
Dottie loved dogs and always made sure to have a few at home. German Shepherds and Cocker Spaniels are her favorite. In the later years of her life, she took up knitting and painting and was taking Spanish classes, never stopping her commitment to learning.
Dottie was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and Godmother, who will be dearly missed.
Dottie was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Daisy Solomon, her husband, John H. Fowler, Jr., and her brothers, Albert and John Solomon.
She is survived by her children Ronald Smith (Stephanie) and Lorenzo Smith (Gail); her grandchildren, Tiffany, Tyler (Weldon), Gina (Matthew), Jessica (Melvin), Kevin, Loren, and Dillion; 14 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Barbara Paker; her brother, Robert Solomon; and her goddaughter, Tamera Stanley. As well as a host of extended family members and friends.
