Donald Wayne Roberson passed away Thursday September 8, 2016 at the age of 86. Don was born in Frannie Wyoming to Frank and Gladys Roberson. After graduating salutatorian of his Deaver High School class he spent 2 years on a scholarship at the University of Wyoming Northwest campus. He entered the Air Force in 1949 during the Korean War and served as a Sr. Statistical Supervisor at Sandia Base in Albuquerque.
In 1950 he married Nan Hairston Roberson in Roswell NM who would remain the love of his life beyond her death in 2009. Upon completing his time in the Air Force he entered The University of New Mexico where he earned his BS degree in Pharmacy and received the H.E. Henry award for excellence. For 10 years he managed Joe E Browne Apothecary and administered some of the first oral Polio vaccine in the early 1960s as county pharmaceutical vaccine chairman. In 1964 he ran an unsuccessful campaign for New Mexico State Representative in district 9. In 1965 he joined Eli Lilly where he worked as a Pharmaceutical Representative until his retirement in 1989.
The family relocated to San Antonio in 1968. He loved the water and was an avid fisherman. Don enjoyed many hobbies including painting, and working with wood. He built much of the furniture in their home. At any public or private function you could always find Don on the dance floor. He was generally the last one standing. Don had been an active member of the San Antonio Power Squadron and participated in the San Antonio Fiesta River parades. He was a life-long member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks where he served in various capacities including District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler for Texas Southwest. He and Nan enjoyed spending the year traveling to the different lodges and getting to know the members in the Southwest region. He got much enjoyment from working with the kids at the Elks annual hoop shoot event and worked to support Texas Elks Children’s Camp in Ottine for children with special needs.
Don left a legacy of love to his children: Carol Muska (Terry),Sherry Brown (Kit),Don Jr(deceased) ; granddaughters, Jennifer Segura (John), Leslie McGuire (Quentin), Lauren Armstrong (Jim), and Sarah Goessler (Andrew); great grandchildren, Cameron, Clark, Natalie, Quinn, Gwen, and Cason; and his brother Al Roberson. We will all miss his good humor and love for life.
Our family would like to express our deep appreciation to his caregivers especially Melody for taking such good care of our loved one like he was theirs.
A memorial service for Don will be held at 12 noon on October 3rd at Sunset Funeral Home 1701 Austin Hwy. Don and Nan’s interment at Fort Sam Houston will follow at 1pm. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to Texas Elks Endowment (Children’s Services) ,1961 FM1586 ,Gonzales, Texas 78629
