June 22, 2021, at the age of 91. Concepcion was born in Havana, Cuba on September 9, 1929, the only child of Andres and Concepcion Calvo.
“Conchita” as she was lovingly called, was a beautiful, bright child always eager to learn; excelling in both math and science. She continued making her parents proud when she completed a post graduate degree in Chemistry and Physics, an achievement unusual for a woman in Cuba at that time.
Upon completion of her education, Conchita married the love of her life Orlando R. Suris, M.D. The two were blessed with four children and planned to make their life in Havana. That dream was altered when Fidel Castro and Communism took root in their beloved country. Deciding they wanted freedom and a better life for their children they made the choice to immigrate to the United States on November 4, 1967. Conchita and Orlando accepted an opportunity to move to San Antonio in July 1968, where Orlando completed his medical residency at Santa Rosa Medical Center. With her children and parents settled, Conchita worked for a brief time in the Santa Rosa Hospital Special Chemistry Lab and then by Orlando’s side in his medical practice for many years.
Despite being extremely busy with the demands of both work and family, Conchita was passionate about uniting the Cuban Community in San Antonio.
With much thought and perseverance, she founded the Centro Cultural Cubano of San Antonio in 1976 where she served as the first president. The CCC was a non-profit organization maintaining Cuban traditions and culture in pursuit of someday seeing a free democratic Cuba. Through the development of family-oriented functions, the CCC was able to fulfill their principal goals, which were to further educate and help the needy of San Antonio.
Conchita was a pious Catholic woman who had unwavering faith and devotion to the Blessed Virgen of Lourdes, the Sacred Heart of Jesus and St. Jude Thaddeus.
Conchita was preceded in death by her husband, Orlando R. Suris, their son, Sergio Suris and parents, Andres and Concepcion Calvo. She is survived by her children Orlando, Lourdes and Jorge Suris; daughter-in-law Robbie Suris; son-in-law Rick Gomez; grandchildren, Danny and Liselle Elizondo, Sean Suris and his wife Elizabeth, Nolan Suris and his wife Kelly and Erin Suris.
