COL Eugene C. Camp, U.S. Army (ret.)

COL Eugene Clark Camp, U.S. Army (ret.), age 92, died January 17, 2013. He was born on July 14, 1920 in Ft. Worth, TX to Walter Pollard Camp and Mona Clark Camp. He graduated from Paschal High School and moved to California where he joined the Coastal Artillery of the California National Guard in 1940. By November 1940 his unit was activated and sent to Pearl Harbor. He was an Anti-aircraft gun sergeant at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He would later attend OCS in the Fiji Islands and end WWII as an Infantry Company Commander. He remained in the Army after the war and eventually was one of the first advisors in Vietnam. He would serve over 32 years of active duty before retiring on March 31, 1973. His last duty assignment was as the G-1 of 5th Army at Ft. Sam Houston. He earned three Legions of Merit, two bronze stars the Combat Infantryman’s badge and numerous other awards, campaign ribbons and certifications and was inducted into the OCS Hall of Fame in 2007. After he retired, he became very active in the Shriner’s Children Hospital in Houston, often driving children and their parents to Houston for free treatment. He initiated with some of his WWII era friends a Saturday morning ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out) group which met every week at Jim’s. He is a past president of the San Antonio Pearl Harbor Survivors chapter and remained active to the end.

While his military career was the highlight of his professional life, the highlight of his life was his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle. He is survived by the love of his life, his bride of 68 years, Margaret; daughter, Carolyn Lennox (Tom) of Burke, VA; son, Greg Camp (Joanie) of Columbus, GA; grandchildren, Tim (Grace), Todd (Sandy), Scott (Jessica), Elizabeth, Matt (Seema) and Jennifer; nephew, Phil (Val) and eight beautiful great-grandchildren.

Visitations will be 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at Sunset Funeral Home. The Graveside Service will be 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
