Christino J. Mares, affectionately known as “Grandpa” to his family, went to be with our Lord on Thursday, August 22, 2013 at the age of 88. Mr. Mares served honorably in the U. S. Army during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was the co-owner of Mares Imports, a shop at the El Mercado for over fifty-five years. He loved reading the newspaper and was a long-time member of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Sacred Heart Catholic Churches.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife Isabel L. Mares. He is survived by his children: Christino Mares and wife Gloria; Eleanor M. Bustamante and husband Jose Ricardo; Irene Flores and husband Cesario; Ninfa Mares and husband Jesse; Victor Mares and wife Juliette, Gloria M. Chavez and husband Jesse. He is also survived by his brother Antonio Mares, 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at Funeraria Del Angel Roy Akers, 515 N. Main Ave., San Antonio, TX, with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. A funeral procession will depart Friday, August 30, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. for a 10:00 a.m. Mass of the Resurrection to be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 2114 W. Houston. Burial will follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery with military honors.
The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the dedicated staff at the Audie Murphy VA Hospital and the Home Based Primary Care Clinic for their excellent care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to The Disabled American Veterans or The American Diabetes Association.
