The world has lost a beautiful soul. Carole Yvonne Moreno passed away on January 16, 2018 at the age of 74 after a brief battle with lung cancer. Carole was born on March 28, 1943 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Her upbringing as an Air Force brat and experiences living all over the country and the world, including Japan and England, helped to shape the worldly, cosmopolitan woman she became. She was fiercely independent and free-spirited, leaving home as a teenager and moving to San Antonio on her own, where she spent most of her life after returning from a twenty year stay in her beloved Chicago. Carole was a paradox of refinement, culture and eccentricity, and salt of the earth simplicity. She loved opera and lobster, and also classic country music and liver and onions.
Carole had a Bachelor and Master of Social Work, degrees she earned when she was in her 50s, and spent her life pursuing a number of different careers, including a social worker, real estate agent, bartender, waitress, and working for Amtrak and United Airlines, but her great passion in this world was saving as many abandoned, injured, and unwanted animals as she could, mostly cats, but sometimes dogs, squirrels and even a pigeon she named Goober. Carole gave everything she had to caring for her own cats and those of anyone who needed help. She went without luxuries, and often even necessities, in order to save and care for any cat in need. She was a beautiful, caring, selfless soul who always put the needs of others ahead of her own. She was smart, witty, elegant yet down-to-earth, cultured yet provincial, and had an amazing sense of humor through the very end. She will she be dearly missed by those lucky enough to have known her. She was one-of-a-kind, and she will never be forgotten. She will always be remembered for her sayings: “Well…” “Might as well. Can’t dance,” and, when asked where she was going, “to hell if I don’t mend my ways.”
Carole was the proud mother of Mark Moreno (Irene), Mike Moreno (Tammy), and Shelly Moreno (Doug), an unconventional grandmother to John, Mark, Sofia, Emma and Jacob, and a step grandmother to Pat (Sarah), CJ (Sarah) and Trina (Eli) and great grandmother to Grayson, Trey, Olivia, Elizabeth and Camden. She is also survived her devoted siblings Tommy Riggles (Teresa), Debbie Flados (Mark) and Bernard Keane, extended family, and countless dear and life-long friends. She is preceded in death by Fred Moreno, her parents Thomas and Marian Riggles, and her sister Linda Riggles.
In lieu of flowers, we know she would love it if you would donate to the gofundme account set up by her dear fellow feline philanthropist to care for eleven of Carole’s cats that will be adopted by a family in Devine, Texas to help set up a cattery and to help with food and veterinary care for them. Her greatest worry when she became ill was her “babies,” and contributing to their care would help to fulfill the promise made to her to ensure they will be well cared for.
