Mom was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on August 8, 1930, to Robert and Florence Bertal. She married Norman S. Leas in 1948 and began her married life as the wife of an Air Force officer, traveling the world and raising her growing family of eleven children. After the death of her husband in 1980, she returned from Germany and entered as a freshman in college at UTSA, graduating four years later with a degree in education. She began a teaching career of over 20 years at West Avenue Elementary School in NEISD teaching kindergarten. During this period, she also obtained her Master's degree in education from Texas A & I University.
Mom loved children, books, music, cats, coffee, and chocolate. She handled life's challenges with dignity and wisdom whether it was the Great Depression, WW II, the loss of her husband, or the total loss of her vision several years ago.
She is survived by her eleven children: Bob, Christine, Pat, Tom, Steve, Barbara, Kevin, Kathy, Jackie, Shari, and David. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a great-great grandchild, nieces, and their families.
A memorial service will be held at Sunset North Funeral Home, 910 N Loop 1604 E, San Antonio, TX, 78232 on Saturday April 1, 2023 at 1:00 PM with Chaplain Phil Johnson officiating. A private graveside service will be held at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery at a later date. The family would like to extend its deep gratitude to all the staff of Hospice Care and Pipestone Adult Care who took such good care of our mother in her last days.
