Calvin Griffin Jr. was born in Cuero, Texas to Allie and Calvin Griffin, Sr. He was called to be with the Lord on July 25th, 2018 in Converse, Texas. He spent his early childhood in Cuero, Texas and subsequently his family moved to Corpus Christi, Texas where Bubba, as he was affectionately known, or (Uncle Bubba) was an outstanding student and athlete, from Solomon M. Coles High School. Calvin joined the United States Army after graduation. Calvin excelled in sports and while stationed in Hawaii his team won 13 out of 15 games and were named the Hottest Hoopsters in an Army Newspaper article.
Calvin met the love of his life, Lois Beavers. They were married and traveled throughout the Continental United States, Europe and Central America. While in the Army Calvin moved up in rank at a rapid pace. He attended Culinary School and obtained his Culinary Arts Degree. He received numerous awards, commendations, medals and attained the rank of Sgt. First Class.
He retired after 21 years of outstanding service and the family settled in San Antonio. After he retired, he attended St. Phillip’s College where he obtained his degree in seamstress/upholstery. He was also a Chief Executive Chef over the Holiday Inn Hotels in San Antonio.
Calvin accepted Christ at an early age while attending St. Matthew Baptist Church in Corpus Christi, Texas. He also attended St. Paul United Methodist Church in San Antonio. He loved Western Movies, watching football, enjoyed a good laugh while humming his favorite Billie Holiday and Sam Cook tunes. He loved telling stories about growing up in the country. He loved to cook, enjoyed a good meal especially beans and rice. Plus anything sweet he could get his hands on. He was known for his infectious laugh. He taught his son’s how to provide for a family and his daughters how to be self-sufficient and independent. And maintaining good grades was mandatory. So was eating everything on your plate, even OKRA.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Griffin, his son, Calvin Anthony Griffin, his son in law, Rodney Clayton Sr., his parents, Allie and Calvin Griffin, Sr., his siblings, Hazel Crecy, Vandenberg Griffin, Jeffrey Lee Griffin, John Riley Griffin, and Gussie Mae Carrington.
He is survived by his sister, Evelina Griffin, 10 children, Maria (Charles) Nious, Ezell (Juanita) Griffin, Linda (Leon) Peterson, Larry (Vanessa) Griffin, Debra Griffin, Sonya (Jerry) Coburn, Richard Griffin, Jacqueline Clayton, Ulysses Griffin and Desi (Cynthia) Griffin. Twenty-one (21) Grandchildren, Twenty-one (21) Great-Grandchildren, and Two (2) Great-great Grandchildren, as well as many relatives and friends. Uncle Bubba impacted the lives of so many and will be greatly missed by all.
