Beth was very competitive from an early age. She began taking dancing and gymnastics, later becoming a Girl Scout. At Pat Neff Middle School she participated in volleyball, basketball, and track. Beth continued to participate in varsity volleyball, basketball, and track at John Marshall High School for four years. Beth was also treasurer for her class.
In middle school Beth showed a pig in the John Marshall stock show for a friend named Jenny Beth. Beth joined the John Marshall Ag program. She showed pigs for the next four years at the John Marshall show as well as the Bexar County and San Antonio Stock Shows.
Beth’s love of horses began at an early age. In elementary school Beth asked Dad for a horse. During high school and college Beth rode on several trail rides – the Hill Country, Kerr County, Bandera, and Helotes. Beth became one of the few women scouts in Texas. One of her fondest memories was carrying the American flag as she rode in the entry parade at the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo.
Beth attended Southwest Texas in San Marcos receiving a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. She graduated with honors. After the graduation she began working for Rose Reriot as a computer programmer. In the fall she returned to Southwest to work on two master’s degrees, one in business and one in the teaching certification, graduating with honors. Beth loved teaching and all of her students, giving them extra attention as well as extra tutoring. Numerous times parents would come and inform her it was the first time their students liked coming to a math class and made passing grades. Beth decorated her class with Dallas Cowboy pictures and paraphernalia. She taught her students to memorize the formulas with songs and poems. Her classes scored high many times in the district. Beth’s love of the Cowboys began early with her Dad. She and a friend were hostesses on buses to and from the games in Dallas. She met several Cowboys when they practiced at the Alamodome. She had lunch with several in San Antonio.
Beth looked forward to summer where she would go to the Frio River and play very competitive volleyball with relatives and friends. One of her favorite activities was floating down the Frio River. She also loved Gulf Shores in Alabama and enjoyed the beach for a month. She also enjoyed going to Rockport every year with her family to fish, swim, and watch the fourth of July celebrations.
Beth’s family would like to thank everyone for their prayers during her illness. Also the excellent nurses and doctor who took care of her with love and gentle care at the hospital.
Thank you to Jake and Blake.
She is survived by her mother Mary Kaye Bates, brother Barry and wife Katy Bates, five nephews: Chance, Sam, Troy, Zack, and Chad. Also her loving dogs Maverick and Jethro, and horses Cash and Blaze.
