Our beloved mother, Bacilia C. Hernandez, passed peacefully surrounded by her family. She joined her husband, Guadalupe L. Hernandez, to be with our Lord on June 12, 2016. She was born on Flag Day, June 14, 1924, to Crisanto and Nestora (Villarreal) Cavazos in Yoakum, Texas; residing in San Antonio since the age of six. Before marrying her very handsome sailor in 1946, Bacilia worked as a waitress at Kress' cafeteria and at Santa Rosa Hospital in food service. After marriage, she became a devoted housewife and mother to seven children: Guadalupe (Simona), Alicia, Delia, David (Mary Jean), Ruben (Mary), Yolanda, Raymundo (Audree).
Bacilia was a good mother; a hard-working, fearless woman of great faith and certitude who faced adversities directly. She was also a cheerful person with a playful disposition who loved and cared for her family, relatives and her many friends. She liked the sound of the accordion in conjunto music and polkas. She loved to whistle, sing, dance and celebrate birthdays. She was often the first one on the dance floor and the last one to leave it. She also made the BEST tortillas.
As a youngster, Bacilia picked cotton, sugar beets and other crops, traveling as far as Michigan to work. She suffered a major stroke in February, 2011, which rendered her bed-bound. Before her stroke she was active with the Sacred Heart seniors enjoying activities, trips and functions with her friends. She helped in directing the choir while her husband accompanied them on the guitar. She made it her mission to visit her friends and relatives in hospitals and nursing homes. She also enjoyed going to Las Vegas with her daughters.
She was preceded in death by her brothers; Eduardo Cavazos, Librado Cavazos, and Ignacio Cavazos.
Bacilia is survived by her seven children, twelve grandchildren: Lori, Jason, Chris; Michelle, Christine; Michael, Amanda, Joseph; David, Jessica; and Sarah, Joshua. She is also survived by two great-grandchildren: David and Miguel; sisters-in-law, cousins and numerous nieces and nephews, and her mascot Little Bit.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 16, 2016 at 5:00 p.m., with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. at Trevino Funeral Home. A procession will depart the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. for a 10:00 a.m. Mass of the Resurrection at Christ The King Catholic Church on Friday, June 17, 2016, with interment to follow at San Fernando Cemetery #3.
