Although she was an only child she grew up with an abundance of aunts, uncles, and cousins and enjoyed many happy times on the family farm in what was then known as Fratt, Texas (which is located where Loop 410 and I 35 intersect on the northeast side of San Antonio). She graduated at 16 from Brackenridge High School where she met her future husband, Jim Smith. After graduation she worked at USAA. She and Jim married in 1951 and together they raised sons Bryan and Scott.
Arleen enjoyed working and instilled a strong work ethic in her sons. She particularly enjoyed her work in the Wealth and Private Banking Department at Broadway Bank, retiring at 85. She loved her coworkers who were like family to her.
She was a volunteer usher at the Majestic Theatre and made many cherished friends of her fellow ushers. She enjoyed traveling and Christmas, but she was happiest just spending time with her friends and family.
Arleen was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church. She was steadfast in her faith and was a loving friend, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Jim.
She is survived by her sons Bryan (Mary Pat) Smith, Scott (Sally) Smith. Grandchildren Thomas Smith and Allison Smith (husband Jake Levy). Great grandchildren David and Chloe Smith and Audrey and Charlie Smith-Levy.
Memorial service will be on December 4, 2023, at 11:00am at Sunset Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway. A reception will be held immediately after the service with a family only graveside service to follow.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in her name to Shepherd King Lutheran Church, 303 W. Ramsey Rd, San Antonio, Texas 78216.
The family would like to thank the caregivers at Morningside Ministries at Menger Springs and Alamo Hospice for the loving care they provided.
