Born on January 26, 1926, in Dilley, Texas, to parents Viviano and Wenceslas Guerra, Alfredo enjoyed his upbringing in south-central Texas alongside his family on their farm.
At the age of 18, Alfredo was drafted into the United States Army and fought in the Pacific Campaign in many regions during World War II. His final battle was during the invasion of Okinawa where he was wounded and was pronounced Missing in Action. Fortunately for the Guerra family, he eventually returned home after being in convalescence on a Navy ship recovering from his battle wounds. He later served as a driver for a Colonel to complete his recovery. He later returned to Texas without waiting for his campaign medals. He eventually received his medals including a Purple Heart Cluster and a Bronze Star, on March 24, 2001, at a ceremony honoring his bravery at the VFW Post 76 in San Antonio.
Upon returning to south Texas, Alfredo resumed his work on the farm and eventually married the love of his life, Emma Navarro in 1947 and they remained married for 47 years until her death in 1992. They lived in Cotulla, Texas for a short while and eventually moved to San Antonio where he began working at Kelly Air Force Base. The Guerra family eventually grew, and he and Emma raised 5 sons and 1 daughter. Aside from raising his own family, they welcomed nieces, nephews, and grandchildren never denying a loving home to those who may have needed one.
Never was Alfredo without love or without showing love. He led a tremendous life—raised to work hard and honor the golden rule—a trait which he passed down to his children. He was fortunate to have traveled in his later years with his grandson, visiting places such as the World War II Memorial in Washington D.C. and even riding the ferry boat at Niagara Falls. He was never one to shy away from an adventure. He was an honorable man who worked hard to provide for his family with love.
Alfredo was preceded in death by his wife, Emma (1992), sons Richard (2003) and Rogelio (2020); and is survived by his brother, Mario V. Guerra, sons: Alfred (Irma), Ralph (Victoria) and David (Ana) and his daughter Maria Isabel; various nieces and nephews, 19 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Heartfelt gratitude to Maria Isabel Guerra for two and a half years of caring for their father and to David Guerra and Martin Martinez for helping with morning and late-night care. Special thanks to those who provided additional care for him in his final days. Especially Julia Bernal and the entire staff of Suncrest Hospice.
Funeral services will begin on May 30, 2023, at Roy Akers Funeral Home, 515 North Main Avenue with visitation beginning at 5 PM until 9 PM with a Rosary to begin at 7 PM. Family and friends will depart at 9:30 AM on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, for a 10 AM mass at San Juan de los Lagos Catholic Church and Shrine, 3231 El Paso St. Burial to follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
