Al Garcia (affectionately known by family as "Gordo") was a humble, God loving, extraordinary musician who was self-taught. He played several instruments and was a singer- songwriter, guitarist, and composer who wrote music and played with several San Antonio bands in the 60's and 70's. He composed songs for The Royal Jesters, Jimmy Edwards, Sunny and the Sunliners, Joe Jama, and several other local musicians. He was known in the music scene as "Big Al".
He moved to Hollywood, California when he was hired as a Music Writer in the late 70's. He worked at Universal Studios and Warner Brothers and belonged to the prestigious organization ASCAP. (American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers). He met many famous movie stars as a Talent Scout Producer and was very well known in the Hollywood and San Francisco Area.
He returned to San Antonio and continued with with his music up until a year ago when he fell ill. He loved reading his Bible and would talk about his love for God to anyone that would listen.
Al loved music and his life was music. He was a brilliant and talented musician who was also a brother, uncle, great uncle and friend. He was a fun loving, eccentric, charismatic, and charming gentleman with a gentle soul. Al continues to live through his music and will remain in our hearts forever.
He is preceded in death by his parents Maria De Jesus Garcia, Nicomedes Garcia, and his great nephew Bobby Dale Neely.
He is survived by his siblings, Robert Garcia (Libby), Ilda Flores, Lolly Perez, Dora Fernandez (Al), Olga Guerrero (John), Alfred Garcia (Mary Jane), Elizabeth Garcia, Richard Garcia and Norma Garcia; 9 nieces and nephews; numerous great nieces and great nephews and one great great niece. He is also survived by his beloved pet dog, Butterball.
The Visitation will be held Monday, January 8, 2024 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Funeraria Del Angel Trevino Funeral Home, 226 Cupples Road, San Antonio, TX 78237 followed by a Rosary to be recited on at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Procession will depart from the funeral home on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. for a 9:45 a.m. Mass of The Resurrection at St. Luke's Catholic Church, 4603 Manitou Dr, San Antonio, TX 78228. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209.
