Robert Ed White, 88, formerly of San Angelo, passed away July 27, 2015, after enduring dementia for many years and more recently, pneumonia. Robert, known as ‘Bob’, was born in San Angelo, July 3, 1927, at 1017 Koberlin Street next to the railroad tracks. Bob attended local schools and at the age of 17 joined the Navy in 1944. He came home in 1946 to complete High School.
After returning home from the Navy, he met and married Bernice Crosswhite of Christoval who had recently graduated from nursing school at the time. They were married for 58 years until her sudden death. Bob began work for San Angelo Telephone Company as a cable splicer’s helper and completed his career some 40+ years later as assistant to the vice-president of construction & engineering with GTE.
Bob was involved in several organizations in San Angelo. He enjoyed his time with the Boy Scouts reaching the rank of Eagle Scout with two gold palms. He was Scout Master for several years. He served as President of the Telephone Union prior to moving into management. He also became involved with coaching YMCA baseball and football for many years while his two sons were growing up. Later Bob and his wife became involved with the leadership of Square & Round dancing for many years and was a ‘que’ or ‘caller’ for Round Dancing. He was also on the San Angelo Recreation Board for a period of time.
During all of Bob’s years in San Angelo he was a faithful member of the Johnson St. Church of Christ and was a deacon for many of those years. In his later years, he attended the Ozona Church of Christ. At the end of his life, he was able to say: ‘I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day.’
Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice White; his two sisters, Martha Minton and Billye Scattergood and her husband Ken. Survivors include his two sons, Dr. Charles E. White and his wife Linda of Montgomery, Texas, and Jim White and his wife Vicki of Ozona, Texas; four grandsons; four great-grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Family visitation is from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Johnson’s Funeral Home. Funeral service is at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 31 in Johnson’s Funeral Home Chapel with Johnnie Perkins of the Ozona Church of Christ officiating. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
